WHAT IS HIP?
Health In Progress (HIP) is a 28-week exercise program which combines Health Education with a Walk/Run Program. HIP is an educational and fitness resource for children, parents, and educators. The materials are designed for middle school students (10 years to 15 years) but can be adapted for use by other age groups.
This program was developed by a Pediatrician member of the TN Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the TN Pediatric Society Foundation, with funding provided by BlueCross BlueShield of Tennessee Community Trust.
WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF HIP?
The goals of HIP are to help young people to recognize the importance of personal responsibility for their health and to provide them with the knowledge and experience that will enable them to make healthy lifestyle choices in childhood and beyond.
HOW DOES HIP WORK?
Students participate in weekly sessions led by volunteers, educators, after/before school care providers or parents. Each lesson is designed to include weekly discussions about a variety of health and safety issues and participation in a walk/run exercise program.
PARENT PARTICIPATION
Parents are strongly urged to participate in the program by walking and running with their children at home.
